FDM vs. Resin 3D Printing: Which Material is Best for Your Project?

When it comes to 3D printing, two technologies dominate the consumer and professional market: FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) and Resin (SLA/MSLA). Both produce impressive results, but they excel in very different situations. Here's what you need to know before placing a custom print order.

What Is FDM Printing?

FDM printing works by melting a filament (typically PLA, PETG, or TPU) and depositing it layer by layer to build up a 3D object. It's the most widely used 3D printing method in the world — and it's what we use at Ulch Prints.

FDM Strengths:

  • Durable and functional — great for parts that need to hold up to handling
  • Wide material range — PLA, PETG, TPU, and more
  • Eco-friendly options — PLA is biodegradable and plant-based
  • Larger print sizes — ideal for statement pieces, decor, and larger models
  • More affordable — lower cost per print, especially for larger items
  • Colour variety — available in dozens of filament colours

FDM Limitations:

  • Visible layer lines on very fine details
  • Less suited for extremely intricate miniatures

What Is Resin Printing?

Resin printing (SLA/MSLA) uses UV light to cure liquid resin into solid layers. It produces extremely fine detail, making it popular for miniatures and jewellery prototyping.

Resin Strengths:

  • Ultra-fine detail — excellent for small miniatures and intricate models
  • Smooth surface finish — minimal layer lines

Resin Limitations:

  • Brittle — not ideal for functional or handled parts
  • Toxic handling — uncured resin requires careful safety precautions
  • Smaller build volume — limited to smaller prints
  • Higher cost — resin material and post-processing add up
  • Not eco-friendly — resin waste requires special disposal

Which Should You Choose?

Here's a quick guide:

  • Choose FDM if you need home decor, functional parts, articulated figures, lithophanes, dice towers, plant pots, or anything larger than a few centimetres
  • Choose Resin if you need ultra-detailed miniatures under 10cm where surface smoothness is the top priority
