From Print Bed to Pride of Place: How to Display Your 3D Printed Dragons
Share
There's a moment every 3D print collector knows well. The print finishes, you peel it off the bed, hold it up to the light — and think: this is too good to hide in a box.
Whether you've got one statement dragon or a shelf full of fantasy creatures, displaying your collection well is half the experience. Here's how to do it right.
Start With a Story, Not Just a Shelf
The best displays tell a story. Instead of lining up pieces in a row, think about grouping them by theme or narrative. A dragon egg flanked by two articulated dragons looks like a scene. A wizard dice tower surrounded by fantasy figures looks like a world. Give your collection context and it becomes art.
Lighting Changes Everything
PLA filament has a subtle translucency that comes alive under the right light. Warm LED strip lighting underneath a floating shelf, or a small spotlight aimed at a centrepiece piece, will make colours pop and details sing. This is especially true for our jewel-toned pieces — Jewel Green, Gold & Purple, and Teal combinations look incredible under warm light.
The Rule of Odd Numbers
Interior designers swear by it: groups of 3, 5, or 7 objects look more natural and visually interesting than even numbers. Try grouping a dragon egg, an articulated dragon, and a small keychain figure together. Three pieces, one cohesive vignette.
Height Variation is Your Friend
Flat displays look flat. Use small risers, books, or wooden blocks to create different heights within your display. Put your tallest piece — like a dice tower — at the back, medium pieces in the middle, and small keychains or figures at the front.
The Best Spots in Your Home
- Gaming table: A dice tower and dragon egg as a centrepiece sets the atmosphere for every session
- Home office desk: Two or three pieces add personality without clutter — and make great conversation starters on video calls
- Floating wall shelf: The classic. Add LED strips and it becomes a feature wall
- Windowsill: Natural light is beautiful on PLA — just avoid prolonged direct summer sun which can soften the material
- Bookshelf: Tuck dragons between books for a fantasy library aesthetic
One Important Care Note
PLA is durable but not indestructible. Keep pieces away from heat sources above 50°C, dust gently with a soft brush, and use museum putty to secure pieces on shelves if you have pets or kids nearby.
